Right, looking at getting some real steel ear defenders either comtacs or sordins with comms. I know that the microphone free comtacs can be retrofitted with a mic just wondering if the same applies to sordin supremes? I know that Sordins are generally viewed as the better of the 2 but I have experience of firing 5.56 with comtacs and they seemed to work fine. So really are the sordins worth the extra money and does anyone know where to buy the microphones for the comtacs from in the uk?

Cheers for reading and thanks for your time.

Sordins are digital and Comtacs Analogue. Comtacs simply shut off, the Sordins just make it quieter so you can still hear talking on the field.

The other thing to consider is that some of the Sordins come with 2 speakers per cup, one for the radio, the other for the ambient. The radio ones will still work with no batteries.

I can do you a deal on Sordins and I still have that Browning!

you can get a microphone fitted on a pair of sordins but its not just a clip on and plug in afair like with comtacs, i asked about it a while ago (earshot communications) all the could do was fir an aviation boom mic which wasnt really what i wanted, i wanted a bowman goose neck type mic, they couldnt do this so i shelled out for a set of Sordin with built in boom mic, well worth the money imho, especially when people are throwing BFGs at you,

heres some pics of what ive run in the past, (aviation mic on the comtacs is what i was told could be fitted on normal sordins)

heres my comtacs with a aviation boom mic

then i brought these sordins which i sold to a team mate

I had a pair of Sordins Supreme Pro Xs, basic model, just an input on the back, no mic.
They got used for airsoft and for real shooting. They were a godsend in both uses. I used mine with a broach ( male to male jack lead from the back into the broach), and they were brilliant. Like the guys say, they don't just cut out the noise, they decide what is damaging to your hearing, and reduce the noise to a safe level. So, when shit is going boom, you can still hear properly.
Looks wise, Sordins are just slick as, Comtacs are a bit bulky looking in comparison cos of where they put the batteries.

If I hadn't desperately needed cash, I'd never have sold them, and if/when I join the forces, one of my first purchases will be some Sordins again.

I've got some Comtac IIs - no complaints about them at all.

I've never had a problem with audio quality or noticed a problem with 'clipping', as everyone says there is. Maybe I'm just lucky or don't pay proper attention.
I have heard from others that Comtacs are more comfortable as well, especially over a longer period. I've never tried Sordins so I can't say if that is true or not, I'm just saying don't discount Comtacs out of hand.
Give Earshot Communications a call to check their price as they were the cheapest when I got mine.

Finally, depending upon the radio you are using, you may need to get an mic amped up so it transmits loud enough. I'm not technical enough to go into the details, just check before you buy.
Earshot fixed all that for me as well. Very professional job and while their main trade is supplying comms to emergency services etc, they understand airsoft and what it is all about.

I've had both. Comtac felt more 'robust', and the battery change was easier. The boom mike was removable, a good thing if you only want hearing protection some of the time and comms now and again. They seemed to 'clip' the sound rather than reducing it. Also found that when the comms kicked in it ovverrode the sounds from the external mikes, which got pretty confusing in 'high stress' situations. Replacement ear cups were more expensive than Sordin ones too, especially the gel ones which make them much comfier.
Peltor, I have 2 sets (Well, one is the wifes!) one with comms built in, the other without. They are more comfy in my experience when worn for hours at a time, and they seem to 'reduce' the sound rather than just cropping the loudest bit. The 'base' model is easily used with comms with the aid of the fly lead that comes with them, and a 'fist' mike or similar.

I am happier with the Sordins than the Peltors, although I have to admit I thought the Peltors looked cooler!

Running games in our bunker, often 4 or 5 in a week, means that I wear my Sordins a hell of a lot. Almost all of my marshalling team have them, and lots of our players do too. I'm already deaf in one ear (from childhood) and anything to stop my remaining hearing being affected is a bonus.

The connector on the right came with my Sordins.

Anyone have any idea what radio type it belongs to? For refrence the one on the left is a Motorola 2-pin.
